Champion of leather work
Driven by necessity, Brett Carseldine first got into leatherwork after purchasing a Ron Edwards book to teach him the process of belt making. “I couldn’t afford to buy one so I decided to make myself one and it’s snowballed from there.” He discovered he had quite a knack for leather work – eventually leading him to win at local and interstate shows
His wins
– Sydney Royal Easter Show – a first place in the Novice Plaited Belt competition, and second in the Open Plaited Belt competition at the Sydney Royal Easter Show
– a first and third place belts at the 2019 Toowoomba Show
– he won his first competition at the Australian Whip Cracking and Plaiting competition in Clifton
– eventually leading him to win at local and interstate shows:
– Sydney Royal Easter Show – a first place in the Novice Plaited Belt competition, and second in the Open Plaited Belt competition at the Sydney Royal Easter Show
– a first and third place belts at the 2019 Toowoomba Show
– he won his first competition at the Australian Whip Cracking and Plaiting competition in Clifton
– and again, recently in the Open Plaited Belt section in Toowoomba this year and a first and second in the Open Plaited Belt in the Australian Whip Cracking and Plaiting competition in February.
These competitions are based on straightness, neatness of the strands that are cut, and the craftsmanship of the belts.
His goals:
“Winning the Open in Sydney is a goal that I’ve set. A goal that I do have is to win the Packer Leather Award at the Toowoomba Show, which is the best overall leather good.”
