For over 30 years, world-renowned Goldwork and Stumpwork embroiderer Alison Cole has been designing and creating signature and award-winning pieces, richly detailed with texture, flourish and delightful surprises.

Her love of design and colour began in her younger years, with fond memories of sorting her mother’s threads into colourways. She went on to study design, colour and embroidery techniques, building an internationally celebrated career as an artist, author, lecturer and teacher of Goldwork and Stumpwork Masterclasses.

Awards:
Among many, awards and honours include the Florence Monod Award for Excellence, the prestigious Ethel Oates Scholarship, and a Commendation for Stitching Excellence from the Embroiderers’ Guild UK. Achievements also include the People’s Choice Award Victorian Embroiderers’ Guild Annual Exhibition and 50th Anniversary Challenge win at the Victorian Embroiderers’ Guild Annual Exhibition, plus finalist at the Australian Textile Art Inaugural Exhibition and second-prize in the Australian Textile Art Awards.

Highlight Commissions:
– to work on a large embroidery for HMAS Ballarat by Dr Susanna Herd
– to embroider a piece of Goldwork for the front cover of the UK magazine ‘Stitch with the Embroiderers’ Guild’ for their 50th issue
– a commission for Christian Dior
– embroidering on the Monash University Chancellor’s robes

Publications:
Alison has written 6 books featuring Goldwork and Stumpwork embroidery (one receiving a Gold Medal at the Independent Publisher Awards in New York, USA and another a bronze medal). She is a regular contributor to a number of magazines, both here in Australia and abroad.

Taught:
Goldwork and Stumpwork Masterclasses at Embroiderers Guilds across Australia, New Zealand, throughout Canada, North America and Europe.

– at Craft and Quilt Fairs, touring Sydney, Melbourne, Canberra, Brisbane and Adelaide
– Artist in Residence, South Western Branch of the Embroiderers’ Guild Victoria

Today, Alison continues to create, teach and inspire from her studio in Ballarat, while supporting research into NORSE New Onset Refractory Status Epilipticus through her embroidery and publications.
